Stories About Cities

The architecture and history of Galle Fort and Colombo Fort inspired my recent cycle of paintings wherein the complex composition of architecture is reduced to simplified volumes. My previous research inaugurated open spaces, urban heritage, lights and colors of the Mediterranean, now my new focus is to deconstruct the life of the town in the context of its history: history of different cultures overlapping - European and Asian. I kept the same artistic approach, using a spatula to apply layers of paint in order to achieve the thick coat resembling the surface of a wall and architectural facades, as well as symbolizing layers of ancient towns that preceded the one visible today. The image of the building became my main interest - images of gateways and towers and also the simplified body of houses forming town. My aim here was to represent the living and creative heart of the town with its main squares, towers and gateways as symbols of the human, cultural and civilizational sinergy. The way of telling the stories about towns is inspired here from the medieval descriptive pictures.
