The desert

I travelled a lot in Egypt. Our favourite trips were to Egyptian deserts. I particularly grew form of the small oasis called Siwa, just a few miles away from the Libyan border. Whenever there, my daughters used to quote their favourite line from the Lawrence of Arabia, explaining why do they like desert: 'I like it because it's clean' – they used to say trying to sound as much as possible like Peter O'Toole. Here, in the desert, I always collected sand that I used in my work. The desert sand for me has just as much shades as the desert skies. I do not think I could live in the desert, but I was certainly never in rush to leave it, once I came there.
